2024-04-25, 11:09 Two requests

This class is part of a decade-long effort to improve teaching world history through the study of fresh water. As part of this effort, I collect student work to cite in presentations and papers. Do use student work, I need permission. If you would be willing to allow your work to be used for academic study, please fill out this form, which explains more about the Fresh Water Stories project. To give an example of how we used student work, I included a final project artwork and final dessert reflection in a presentation I made at the Modern Language Association annual conference in January. Student work is the best source we have for improving our courses, so I’m grateful to all who fill out the form, at whatever level of permission you grant.

2024-04-08, 10:25 Podcast workshop

We will workshop your podcasts on Tuesday in class, and they’ll be due Wednesday night at 10 pm.

2024-04-05, 15:44 Podcasts

I reviewed my online class’s podcasts first because their 2nd plates are due before yours. That process beat me up a bit, so I’m being realistic that I’ll finish reviews of your podcasts this weekend. If you want to get started revising, below are the most common comments I’m leaving for students. Look for these comments, and more, on your Assignment file soon. Podcasts (audio) for next week are posted.

[Please consider revising your podcast to both shrink the subject and in doing so focus on a more engaging subtopic. Find a primary source that allows you to tell a very small part of your topic, say an object at the Metropolitan or British Museums. -Jack]

[Please consider how to relate your topic to an everyday listener’s interest, both in your intro section and the ending. Ease your listener in and out. Why should they care about your subject? -Jack]

[Which of these is a primary source? -Jack]

[I encourage you to re-read chapter 3 of  Sound Reporting for how to write for the radio. Currently your format is correct but your style is that  of academic writing.  -Jack]

[Wikipeida and Britannica are credible but not quality sources. You have access to the highest quality historical research available through our Normandale library. Consider using the Research Guide created just for this class to find stronger source.-Jack]

2024-04-05, 09:37 Guidance on podcasts

Your podcast drafts will be graded credit/no credit so that I can focus my time on giving you actionable feedback. Feedback will be finished today this weekend.

Yesterday’s web page outage lasted around 35 minutes. Thank you for your patience and apologies to those of you attempting to access jacknorton.org during that period.

2024-04-04, 10:15 jacknorton.org down

The site that is the companion to this one for our course, jacknorton.org, is down. I’m working with the server to return it to service ASAP.
